A successful hydroponics setup requires the right balance of a few key components. These are light, food and water, of course. Plants also need fresh air to breathe. If your growing room is too hot or humid, mould and fungal problems can affect both plants and soil.
When it comes to air circulation, indoor plant growers are often utilizing otherwise unused areas such as a garage, spare room or closet space. In these types of spaces, a regular supply of fresh air can be limited. The answer? Hydroponic fans
Inline fans or exhaust fans remove heat, humidity and stale air from your growing room or grow tent. The air passes through a ducting system with or without filters. Hydroponics ventilation can also include the use of oscillating fans. These fans replicate a gentle outdoor breeze for plants to strengthen and grow.
How to select the correct fan for my situation? Typically for exhaust, we recommend a simple length x width x height /3 calculation. This will give you the amount of air (cubic feet per minute, CFM) that you will need to move to properly ventilate your space allowing for three-minute air exchange (all the air in the space is exchanged for fresh air every three minutes). This is the number you will match your filter to.
Example:
Room size: 10’x12’x8’ (960 cubic feet) 960 cubic feet / 3 minutes = 320CFM (Minimum recommended CFM to exchange the air every 3 minutes)
What system should I use in my Grow Tent? In an exhaust system, the air only passes through the filter once which makes it even more important that as much odor/VOC ( Volatile Organic Compounds ) is removed as possible with one hit. This means that the VOC must have a particular amount of time of exposure to the carbon in order to be fully absorbed. The benefit of running an exhaust-only system is to create a negative static pressure within the room which will draw fresh air into the room.
